Job Description

The CAO will create and implement a comprehensive, strategic advancement program in all areas of resource development, including fundraising, donor cultivation, communications, and outreach. Alongside the President, they will identify key opportunities to build new resourcing connections, strengthen existing ones, and discern the best use of time and energy. 

 

The CAO will provide innovative, culturally appropriate leadership within the Executive Team and as they supervise, mentor, and galvanize the 3–4-member Advancement and Communications team to establish and execute their strategy.

 

The CAO will champion collaborative advancement efforts within the organization in a way that matches and enhances DOOR International’s culture and values. They will work closely with colleagues across the organization as they develop strategies to cultivate, solicit, and care for individual and organizational donors. They will support the President in engaging the Board of Directors to guide its members’ fundraising and advocacy efforts.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a multi-year fundraising strategy that includes diverse revenue streams. Set, monitor, and report on measurable goals for revenue sustainability and growth.
  • Develop and implement a multi-year communications and marketing strategy including donor/partner education, pipeline, acknowledgement, and giving. Utilize a wide variety of communication platforms strategically. Act as the brand steward for the organization.
  • Manage and empower the Advancement and Communications team through education, mentoring, team building, supervision, encouragement, clear goals, and accountability.
  • Work closely with the President, the Board, and the Executive Team to establish fundraising goals.
  • Work closely with the CFO to forecast revenue goals, perform monthly revenue reconciliation, and manage donor reports to maintain accuracy and financial accountability.
  • Develop a foundation of trust and communication with other organizational leaders, learning from their diverse experiences, cultures, and backgrounds.
  • Advocate and educate internally for deeper understanding of how advancement efforts interact with DOOR’s programs and ministry.
  • Personally manage a portfolio of major donors.

 

Reports to: CEO/President

Status: Full Time Exempt

Supervises: Advancement and Communications Personnel

Salary Range: $125,000 – $135,000 annually

Key Qualifications

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and ten years of experience in advancement work and moves management, with increasing levels of leadership and accountability.
  • Demonstrated success developing and implementing a sustainable, multi-year advancement strategy.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising with diverse sources and methods.
  • Experience with CRM systems and strategies.
  • Experience leading and managing a team of advancement staff.

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Cultural competence developed through experience navigating culture and power dynamics between groups of people with diverse or marginalized identities.
  • High emotional and social intelligence and communication skills.
  • Commitment to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, to the global Christian community, and agreement with DOOR International’s Statement of Faith (https://doorinternational.org/who-we-are).
  • A passion to advocate for the Deaf community, including its culture and values.
  • A commitment to learn or improve fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 20% of the time, within the USA and internationally, sometimes working extended hours.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Highly preferred: Profound personal understanding and appreciation of the Deaf experience
  • Fluency in ASL or another sign language.
  • Relevant Masters level degree
  • Significant experience with non-profit communications and marketing strategies, methods, and challenges

Now at our 40th-anniversary milestone, DOOR is in the midst of a strategic planning process which emphasizes strengthening and expanding our ministry model. The Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) will play a critical role in DOOR’s ability to meet its goals over the next three to five years. This is a remote role within the USA, but includes a significant amount of travel.
